Stereolab fans have waited long enough. The UK band led by Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier, affectionately known as the Groop, will make its long-awaited return to Australia this February on the back of 'Chemical Chords', its ninth studio album and first for 4AD.
Listen after listen after listen, High Places' debut album is still a stunning puzzle and a mind-bending curiosity. It's a world where the basic is built up through complex and detailed percussive texture, and the complex is broken down into basic gentle harmonies. Even if it isn't always melodically rich or enjoyable, you can't help but admire a collection of songs that consistently makes you scratch your head. In an era when many new artists can be so blatantly and painfully derivative, 'High Places' should be celebrated.
