When Alice In Chains were announced as headliners for the second touring Soundwave Festival, the first reaction from many people was "Isn't the lead singer dead?". But while vocalist Layne Staley died of an overdose in 2002, drummer Sean Kinney seems nonplussed when asked why the band reformed under the Alice In Chains moniker (they've been playing with William DuVall, who also contributes rhythm guitar, since 2007).
With the new year now upon us, it's safe to say that 'Beaches' was one of the albums of 2008. In a year notable for the number of well-received debut albums, this rich collage of noise taking its cues from a few key 60s and 70s stands out as one of the best. Excellently mixed and produced, the sound throughout is crisp and clear even when the three guitars rise to a ringing crescendo, and this is absolutely vital to the album's success as these make for some of the best moments.
