 | Wednesday 13.
"Although not necessarily on purpose, I've always sort of been the black sheep with everything I've ever been involved with, whether it be school or work. Nw I'm in the music industry I've got fans and I can tour all over the world, but I'm still kinda that same old oddball," laughs ghoulish shock-rocker Wednesday 13. "It makes it hard when playing sometimes, though, as they can't ever find bands for me to go on tour with for support because nothing ever really seems to fit. Which I guess is fine in itself, because I would rather do my own tour anyway. I'm fine doing little club shows for a couple of hundred kids anyway, and if that's as good as it ever gets, then that's great for me as I absolutely love it!."
When most people hear the name Wednesday 13 they might recall his work with well-known rock act The Murderdolls, but would be hard pressed to cite anything else which he was involved with. Since the age of 15 Wednesday has collaborated with more than a few musicians and small bands, but gained his first taste of wide scale notoriety for his work with his concept group Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13. Now Wednesday has decided to go back to writing essentially as solo artist. Despite his last release 'Transylvania 90210' being available for a while now, Wednesday thankfully treated all of my questions as if it was the first time he'd been confronted with them.
"I still love talking about that release, as I covered so much ground with it," he enthuses. "One thing which I am really happy with is that I feel I achieved the atmosphere that I wanted, and that is something which a lot of records don't have. This record starts off pretty fast and heavy, but then about half way through when the title song comes in it changes. That's something different which people haven't really heard from me before - a song with no drums, more or less acoustic. Even the album closer A Bullet Named Christ was something different as well. I wanted the record to be a like a roller coaster with a lot of stuff that you wouldn't really expect, with a cool atmosphere, and a cool movie-like vibe, which I feel that I accomplished with this one."
Thankfully the recording manages to generate a really dirty rock sound without stepping over that fine line into becoming amateur-sounding. Wednesday agrees. "Yeah, the mix on it was exceptional. I produced the record and I tracked it here in a studio close to my house, then I sent it to Collin Richardson, a guy that has worked on so many different bands, like Devil Driver, Fear Factory, Napalm Death, Machine Head. I sent these rough tracks to him, and we then spoke on the phone about what I was looking for sound-wise, and he matched it perfectly. He sent me the mixes and there was no second guess on any of the mixes. Basically what he sent me was perfect. I was stoked."
When I asked about Wednesday's non-musical ambitions, he enthusiastically reveals something unusual. "Up until I was 12 years old I wanted to be a guy like Rambo and go out there and fight other countries, and then I realised how stupid that was, so then I either wanted to make movies or be a cop, believe it or not," he laughs. "A lot of people are surprised when I say this because everyone is normally so quick to say 'fuck the police' or whatever, but I'm very pro-cop and always thought that that would be a very cool job."
Given that Wednesday is a devoted collector of movie paraphernalia and horror merchandise, before our conversation ends he informs me that he is now on the verge of becoming a collectable himself. "I have a company right now that is making a Wednesday13 puppet," he laughs. "It got slowed down in production because they had a lot of trouble making the hair. I don't quite know when it will be finished; actually, it could even be done right now. I haven't spoken to the guy who is making it back home, but I gotta tell you that to me it was always the ultimate thing I had in my mind when doing what I do: that I would one day get to the point in my career where I could have a figure or a doll made of me. Now that's cool!."
