Spiderbait
Greatest Hits
UMG
Ah Spiderbait: the mere mention of their name brings back memories
of long summers, Hottest 100s, and very early mornings watching Rage.
It has now been 15 years since Kram, Janet and Whitt started churning
tunes out and they've decided to release a greatest hits compilation
to enlighten those not yet familiar with their back catalogue beyond
last year's 'Tonight Alright', which included the singles Black
Betty, Fucken' Awesome and the somewhat underrated Tonite.
The record runs in a reverse-chronological order, starting with the
brand new On My Way and going all the way back to their first
single Circle K. This retrospective neatly shows off the amount
of musical styles which Spiderbait have managed to tackle over the
years, from their early metal/punk/pop sound (Old Man Sam,
Footy) to their big hits (Calypso, Buy Me A Pony),
more funky places (Stevie, Shazam), electro (Glockenpop)
and everywhere in between. Initial copies of the CD come with a DVD
of all of their video clips, including tracks such as Plastic
which are strangely absent from the CD. However the brief notes on
each of the songs by the band make a pleasant change from the usual
self-congratulatory write-ups found in the sleeves of most compilations.
This collection makes evident the fact that Spiderbait have always done what they felt like doing no matter what anyone else thought, and in doing so have proved themselves to be one of Australia's most interesting and precious musical oddities. If you're a fan this record may only be worthwhile if you want all the songs compiled onto the one CD, but if you have yet to acquaint yourself with Spiderbait's past this is the place to start.
