Puff 'n' Stuff.

Oh baby! How sweet is the Big Day out lineup for 2006 looking? Tickets are already zooming out dB's door for what's looking like the best BDO ever, with The White Stripes, Iggy & The Stooges, Franz Ferdinand, Kings Of Leon, The Mars Volta, Soulwax, The Magic Numbers, 2ManyDJs, Gerling, The Living End, Dei Hamo, Magic Dirt, Cut Copy, End Of Fashion, Faker, The Grates, Youthgroup and, of course, Adelaide's own Wolf & Cub - they were on the local stage last year, now they're doing the whole tour. How good is our town? Anyway, it's all happening at the Wayville Showgrounds on Fri 3 Feb, and you wouldn't believe the names that Puff's been told are yet to be announced - so might we suggest that you get your tickets now, before it sells out and your heart breaks when you hear what you're going to miss...

Speaking of great things about Adelaide music, how great Adelaide music is and the general Adelaide-related greatness of music, it's time to nominate your favourite SA bands, solo artists, venues, releases and more in the third dB Magazine Readers Awards, or the dBras as we like to call 'em. Check out the big dBras thing in a page or so's time, or just log on to www.dbmagazine.com.au and get nominating.

Speaking of the dB Magazine website, it's got a few exclusive, online-only interviews with such diverse acts as Kinski, Taxiride and Wednesday 13: the print edition is so chock-full of goodness that we had to spill over into cyberspace. That's the dB Magazine difference: when it comes to our readers, we always go that extra mile (or, in this case, that extra three pages on a website).

Time for Puff to turn a gimlet eye to the subject of CD launches: specifically the million or so that are happening in our town this fortnight, what with it being such a bubbling cauldron of creativity and all. First up, Fighterpilot have a new single entitled The World Can't Touch Me, which they'll be launching at the Enigma Bar on Fri 21 Oct, with Booster, Velveteen Habit and Last Minute-ville keeping you occupied beforehand.

The Story Of? are also launching their full-length album at the Crown & Anchor on Fri 21 Oct: it's called 'The Forgotten', it's got twelve tracks and it'll b played in its entirety form star to finish - with a few surprises, according to the band. They'll also be joined by Miracle Hat and Crying Blue Rhetoric.

Concrete Child are also in a CD-launching mood: they'll be setting their debut free at the Jade Monkey on Sat 29 Oct.

King Daddy have a brand new single out, and what's a single without a launch? That's the thinking behind their show a the Crown & Anchor on Fri 28 Oct, with Double Agents and The Unspoken Things.

Those mighty men of the blues that Puff knows as Bluestone are launching their CD-EP 'Fast Track' at the Fad Bar & Gallery on Sat 22 Oct.

Bodyjar blew all comers away at their comeback show a few months back, and now that audiences are that little bit more familiar with their self-titled CD they're set to do it all again at the Adelaide UniBar on Sat 22 Oct, along with Away From Now and Sumi.

Remember that the very day that this issue of dB Magazine hits the streets - Wed 19 Oct - will be topped off by a mighty slab of rock when Parkway Drive play an all-ages show at Fowler's Live with Her Nightmare and Stronghold.

Remember a couple of issues ago when Puff assured you, the valued reader (or "word consumer", as you will shortly be recategorised for reasons of quality assurance) that Heaven's closure was temporary and wouldn't affect the gigs booked there in the future? Well, it turns out that this claim is now inoperative: as it stands, Heaven's doors are not looking set to open any time in the foreseeable future. This means that the various events housed there are either cancelled or moved: Puff notes that several of the club nights (including Timewarp on Wednesday nights) are now at St Pauls, while the well-groomed chaps of Thirsty Merc would like you to know that their show on Sun 6 Nov is now on at the Adelaide UniBar. All tickets are still valid for the all-ages gig, but the smaller room means it will sell out that much more quickly: so if you're planning on getting tickets, hop to it.

Similarly, The Beautiful Girls gig on Thurs 3 Nov has now been moved to the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel - again, all tickets are still valid for the new venue, and again you'd be wise to get in early.

Don't let Tim Rogers' recent solo album fool you: You Am I are still a going concern, which would explain that gig they're doing at the Governor Hindmarsh on Sat 29 Oct with Giants Of Science and The Fuzz.

The magnificent indie-rock sorts Souls On Board have convinced their equally-rock'n-and-indie pals The Mares to join them on a romp around the country in support of their respective debut CDs - and you'd be a gosh-durned fool to miss them at Jive on Sat 22 Oct, where they'll be welcomed by Special Patrol.

Oh, that Darren Middleton's enjoying Powderfinger's time off, isn't he? He's coming back again with his buddies in Drag for an Enigma Bar show on Thurs 27 Oct, with The News and The Unspoken Things.

It's art! Art! Melbourne noise merchants Jemima Jemima (featuring former dB Magazine writer Michael Bray, late of Snap! Krakk!) launch their 'Redcoats' album at the Lizard Lounge on Thurs 27 Oct, with suitably abrasive support from Hit The Jackpot and Sweet Raxxx.

Stuff from Puff: there are rumours floating around our friend The Internet that Sonic Youth will be returning to the four-square "classic" lineup: apparently multi-instrumentalist Jim O'Rourke (who joined the 'Youth in 2002) is leaving to return to his production and solo careers before the band start recording their next album, which is rumoured to be called 'Sonic Life' and will also be the final album under their current contract with Geffen... In other Sonic Youth news, the band recently got a vanload of their old gear back: the story goes that a family member of the person who swiped their stuff in 1999 quietly returned their gear last month, much to the band's delight... Speaking of US bands that Puff worshipped as a Puffling, the classic REM lineup were reunited at a friend's wedding reception recently: former drummer Bill Berry (who retired in 1997 after suffering a brain hemorrhage) took kit duties as the quartet ran through a set of classics including Sitting Still, The One I Love and debut single Radio Free Europe. Awwwww... Hilariously, US online gambling site nine.com - who has been running a book on the separation of those 'Newlyweds' Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey - has cancelled all wagers on their demise because almost all of the big-dollar bets on a split originated from areas that the couple have recently lived in, making the site's owners suspect they had inside dope on the state of the marriage... Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway have all been named in a suit against the makers of the new Harry Potter film. It's a longish story, but here's the short version: in the third book ('The Goblet Of Fire') there's a school dance at Hogwarts, with music supplied by a magic-literate band called the Weird Sisters. For the upcoming film of said book the band are played by the aforementioned trio of Cocker, Greenwood and Selway, although the band aren't actually named in the film. Canadian folk trio Wyrd Sisters are up in arms about their name being used (or, as it turns out, not) and are suing the studio (Warners) and the aforementioned chaps for completely ruining their lives forever and making it completely impossible for them to ever play a gig anywhere ever again, or something. Puff's hoping they've paid their lawyer up front... And finally, pity the Occupational Health and Safety officer on the Motley Crue tour: a mere couple of weeks after frontman Vince Neil did his leg on stage, now drummer Tommy Lee is blowing himself up: a pyrotechnic display went awry toward the end of at their show in Casper, Wyoming on Wed 12 Oct. Lee, naturally, was suspended from wires and swinging between floating drum kits when he was hit by sparks from roman candle-style fireworks above the stage. When they left the stage he was rushed to hospital. Apparently he's fine and the tour is progressing as planned, meaning that those with tickets to their Thurs 8 Dec show should breathe easy - for the time being, at least.

You know how those Swedish rock folks The Hives are playing at Thebarton Theatre on Sat 22 Oct? Well, at 3.30pm that same day they'll also be doing an in-store signing at Big Star Records on Rundle Street: Puff reckons "early" is probably the time to arrive...

Cog tore the place up recently with touring buddies Shihad, now they're coming back to finish the job with a show at the Gov on Sun 30 Oct along with Grand Fatal and Jakob.

The Whitlams are working on their new album (with producer J. Walker of Machine Translations, no less), but to get in the mood they're doing two shows at the Gov on Fri 21 Oct.

The sweet, gently melancholic sounds of Grand Salvo will be a-wafting out of the Grace Emily on Wed 2 Nov, preceded and enriched by the similarly alluring sounds of Jack Ladder and Kes.

Lordy, there's yet another rootsy, acoustic solo artist coming atcha straight outta Perth: but this time, it's a female artist: her name's Saritah, she's got a brand new double A-side single called These Days/You're The One, and she'll be at the Grace Emily on Thurs 20 Oct.

Gyroscope's 'Are You Involved?' was 'We Liked It And You Will Too' last issue, so Puff can be pretty confident that you'll be damn impressed with the lads live - and as luck would have it, they're just about to do two shows with Behind Crimson Eyes and Mere Theory! Catch them at the Loxton Hotel on Sat 29 Oct and an all-ages show at Fowler's Live on Sun 30 Oct.

Hey, lovers of the rockin' and skatin' arts! Sat 12 Nov will mark the inaugual Grinder Festival, a day-long celebration of skate and punk at Le Rox (aka The Bridgeway Hotel). They'll have the Daily Grind skate team making with the shredding action outside, with a slew of bands indoors in the evening (including interstate visitors Lights Out Berlin and Edward, along with Liability Of My Own, Save & Exit, 919, Her Latest Flame, Second Only To Wednesday, December In Ruins and 52 Pick Up). Tickets are on sale now, so be quick.

Don't look at Puff like that - you've got plenty of reasons to grab your wallet, keys and your trusty dB Magazine and...
