Van Halen
The Best of Both Worlds
Warner
Like so many of their muscal peers, Van Halen occupy a special place
in my heart. Their songs conjure so many fond memories of childhood,
especially when original vocalist David Lee Roth sang, "I think of
all the education that I've missed / But then my homework was never
quite like this", in their seminal work, Hot For Teacher. So,
when faced with the opportunity of reviewing 'The Best of Both Worlds',
their new greatest hits CD, one would assume that I would relish the
task. Unfortunately, it's somewhat of a letdown.
The last thing I would want to suggest is that this compilation is
devoid of good material: there are numerous examples of their wonderful
career, including my personal favourites Why Can't This Be Love,
Hot For Teacher, and Runnin' With The Devil, not to forget
the ever-popular, Panama, and Jump. However, there are
some obviously bad choices including their shocking cover of Dancin'
In The Street, and three new songs that leave much to be desired.
Considering this is double disc release, there should have been more
songs that weren't singles, and instead included more of their classic
album moments. There are also a few too many Sammy Hagar-era songs
for my liking.
If this was a true greatest hits compilation and not just a glorified singles collection it would have made me want to dust off an old skin-tight pair of jeans that are about two sizes too small, cover my hair with enough spray to do damage to the ozone layer and then dance around the house playing air-guitar to Edward Van Halen's wonderful solos. Unfortunately, you'd be much better served listening to the original albums.
