I Am Kloot
I Am Kloot
The Echo Label/Liberation
I Am Kloot's 2001 debut 'Natural History' was a lost classic. For we lucky few who have heard it, it's sunk its way into our collective consciousness as one of the best, most interesting and involving debuts of the 21st century. For me, it showed a way of combining blues and pop to brilliant effect. I thought they may have been lost forever - but never fear, lyrical genius Arnold Bramwell and Co. are back with a more polished and thorough outing in their self-titled second release.
'I Am Kloot' begins in a slow fashion with Untitled #1, not
as striking as '...History' opener To You, but moves into classic
territory with first single From Your Favourite Sky. This is
what I've been craving for three years, and it's sensational. Life
In A Day is up next, with the best drumming I think I've heard...
ever. Here For The World is back into the acoustic world set-up
from their debut, a brilliant and welcome return. It leads seamlessly
into the beautiful A Strange Arrangement Of Colour, the rhythmic
Cuckoo, bassy Mermaids, sweet Proof and old-school
blues-rock Sold As Seen. Singer/songwriter territory invades
toward the end with Not A Reasonable Man and the Crowded House-esque
3 Feet Tall and The Same Deep Water As Me.
No longer a niche band for a tiny market, Kloot have explored the mainstream in an extremely positive way - it's the best English album I've heard so far this year. But if you find it somewhere, do get 'Natural History'; that one's a true classic.
