The Essential Fiona O'Loughlin Vol. 3
accesscomedy.com
Nova Cinema 1, until Sun 14 March
Fiona O'Loughlin's inspiration as a comedian is herself, her normal blokey husband, herself, her five children and herself. The fact that she's from Alice Springs and that she publicly rebuffs all principles of motherhood, domestic drive and social tact is more of an incidental convenience to glean stories from rather than the life long encumbrance she makes it out to be. She kids you not. With unbridled honesty we're not only subjected to tales of the O'Loughlin family's dysfunctional daily traits, many of which are quite minor, mind you, but why let that get in the way of a good laugh, and we're given a good gossiping about everything and everybody.
The most beautiful feature of O'Loughlin is that none of this is set out in character and none of her stories appear to be either made up or exaggerated, what you see is what you get. She has this amazing ability to pick up on even the most trivial aspects of being a couch-bound mother and bored country wife, and laconically relay them in a manner that's both malevolent and delightfully welcoming, not forgetting very, very funny. One just might feel sorry for her if you didn't have to stop to consider her poor, long suffering family first. I kid you not.
